The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is a standardized entrance examination conducted globally. The SAT exam is central to the admission process in many universities and colleges. Let us read in detail to understand what is SAT exam.
SAT test measures the readiness of students to cope with the demands of college. It examines students in three core areas.
These are math, writing, and critical reading. The design of the SAT format is such that students participate in grades 11 and 12 and can then submit these scores while applying to colleges of their choice.
The SAT exam format comprises three sections of Evidence-Based Reading, Writing (EBRW), and Math.
Students are allotted three hours to complete the exam. A detailed view of SAT structure is presented in the table below:
Section | Number of questions and Types | Total Test Time | Skills Required |
---|---|---|---|
Evidence-based Reading | 52 multiple choice | 65 mins | Vocabulary and reading in context |
Writing | 44 multiple choice | 35 mins | Usage of grammar |
Math | 45 multiple choice 13 student response 58 (Total) |
80 mins (25 min - no calculator section and 55 mins optional calculator section) | Problem-solving, data analysis, and advanced math |
The EBRW section comprises of assessment of craft and structure, standard English convention, information, and expression of ideas.
While the math section assesses students on algebra, trigonometry, geometry, advanced maths, data analysis, and problem-solving skills.
After understanding the SAT pattern, it is important to look at what is SAT score.
The SAT scoring is done on a 1600-point scale. The scoring is done on two subsections of EBRW and math.
Initially, a raw score is collected for students and converted to scaled scores. There is no negative marking for the wrong answer in the SAT exam format.
An additional sub-score on a scale of 20-80 is used to determine how the student fared in comparison to others.
To appear for SAT, there are no eligibility criteria. In general, students in the age group of 16-18 years take the exam.
However, there is no upper age limit mentioned in the SAT information.
In addition, SAT forms can be filled out by students using online registration or mail. For registration, the student must have a valid passport to appear for the examination.
The online registration is done on the College Board with a photograph and other details.
Once the submission of the fee is confirmed, the admission ticket is generated. In case the student is not able to fill out the form online, the offline booklet is available on the school board.
